What are Take Profit and Stop Loss orders
Take Profit and Stop Loss are orders that close your position automatically when the price reaches a level you set. They let you lock in a gain or cap a loss without having to watch the market constantly.
| Take Profit | Stop Loss |
Closes your position when | The price moves in your favour | The price moves against you |
Purpose | Lock in your gain | Limit your loss |
For example, if you open a long position at $100:
A Take Profit at $120 closes the position automatically if the price rises to $120, securing your gain.
A Stop Loss at $90 closes the position automatically if the price falls to $90, capping your loss.
How they work
Both orders work the same way, just in opposite directions. Two things to know:
They trigger on mark price, not the chart price. Your order activates when the mark price hits your level, not when the last traded price does. This means a brief price spike on the chart may not trigger your order if the mark price did not reach that level. See What is mark price.
They do not guarantee your exact exit price. Once triggered, the order executes at the best available market price. In fast-moving markets, the actual exit price may be slightly different from your level.
How to set them
You can set a Take Profit and a Stop Loss when placing a new order or after a position is already open. You can set one of them, or both at the same time.
When placing a new order:
On the order screen, enter your position details.
Enter your price in the Take Profit (TP) field, the Stop Loss (SL) field, or both.
Tap Confirm to place the order. Your Take Profit and Stop Loss are active as soon as the position opens.
On an existing position:
Go to your open position and tap “Edit take profit / stop loss”.
Enter or update your price in the TP or SL field.
Tap Confirm to save.
Editing or removing them
You can update or remove a Take Profit or Stop Loss on any open position at any time.
To edit: go to your position, tap Edit, update the TP or SL price, and tap Confirm.
To remove: go to your position, tap Edit, clear the field, and tap Confirm.
Both orders are cancelled automatically when the position they are attached to is closed.
Questions
Is my order guaranteed to execute at exactly my price?
No. When your Take Profit or Stop Loss triggers, it executes at the best available price. In normal market conditions this will be very close to your level, but during sharp moves it may differ slightly.
What triggers my order, the chart price or the mark price?
The mark price. If the chart price briefly touches your level but the mark price does not reach it, your order will not trigger. See What is mark price for more detail.
Can I set a Take Profit and a Stop Loss on the same position?
Yes. Most traders set both: a Take Profit above and a Stop Loss below their entry for a long position, or the reverse for a short. Whichever level the mark price reaches first closes the position, and the other order is cancelled automatically.
Can I add them after I have already opened a position?
Yes. You can add, edit, or remove a Take Profit or Stop Loss on any open position at any time.
